Swarm 2009 / VATSIM $100 Hamburger Event

It is getting VERY close to Saturday and the VATSIM $100 Hamburger! Just as a reminder the event is on Saturday September 19th, 17:00 PDT (24:00Z). You can find ALL details here:

http://www.laartcc.org/event/info/107

We want to see as many people as possible out there!

The folks at ZLA have been nice enough to put together a full "Cheat Sheet" for our flight for new pilots. Complete with navigation examples, radio examples, etc. You can download it, and study it ahead of time.

Listen to this episode for a walkthrough of the sheet, and more information on ZLA.

We encourage everyone to show up, all controllers have been briefed on the event and are out there to help new pilots. But it certainly wouldn't hurt to go out and make a few intro flights on Vatsim ahead of time. (Danton and I did, it was a lot of fun!) You may also check out this quick tip sheet from Mark.

You can also voice chat with other FSBreak listeners duriing the event. Please see this post for all details!

We want to make an impression for the ZLA folks, and want every FSBreak listener to be there!

Of course, you can always Contact Us with any questions. We'd love to try to help.

A Rant from Austin...

Austin Writes:

First of all: Our re-supply cost on the level-1 USB keys to avoid the DVD-copy check is running about $30 per unit (!!!!!!!) so I have pulled the product until we can get our cost-of-goods down a little below $29… if we can do that, then I will re-introduce the level-1 USB key option at the $29 price-point to avoid having the DVD in the drive. I don’t want to raise the price of the USB keys to be HIGHER than the DVDs, but the DVD duplication costs run about $7 for a copy of X-Plane, and the USB keys run about $30 per unit… so the $29 price-point on the keys is…. problematic.

Of course X-Plane is worth $99/copy or more (a price-point at which I could easily include a USB key with each copy!), BUT the retail outlets only accept low-price-point software (for us, $29!!!!), so THAT is what has driven X-Plane pricing so absurdly low. And a $29 price on a piece of software don’t work too well for a key that costs me $30 to buy from the manufacturer! I am seeing if I can get a better deal on the keys now so I can make this work at the $29 price point.. once you have used a USB key to unlock X-Plane, it is really clumsy to go back to that DVD!

(Note: To anyone that might suggest that I move my production to China, farm out tech-support to India, or out-source shipping to Mexico to lower the cost: DON’T. We get our USB keys from Maryland, DVDs from Fort Mill South Carolina, Tech Support from Randy Witt in Kansas, and shipping from Mike Brown in Columbia, South Carolina. And as for the price: You can afford $29 to $59 easily. This product will continue to be made in America, despite any ill-conceived advice to the contrary).

So, enough ranting there… I just want to point out the fallacy of any suggestion (which has been made) that I move my production to China (it ain’t gonna happen), and say that I am working to get the manufacturing price point down as low as I can get it here in the USA so I can re-introduce the level-1 keys at the low $29 price-point.

And now, on with the show!

Also, X-Plane 9.40 RC3 Has now been released, more info here.

REX 'NEXT' Cloud Shadows?

No other real information here. SimFlight says that it supposedly wasn't possible for FSX to have cloud shadows because the cloud engine was taken from FS2004.
